Blemmydes, Nicephorus
(c. 1197–1272)
   Theologian.
   After the sacking of Constantinople in the Fourth Crusade, Nicaea became a major centre of Greek Christianity. Blemmydes, a physician turned priest, was an outstanding figure in the city, founding a school, establishing a monastery and teaching philosophy. In his theological writings he attempted to reunite the Western and Eastern Churches and he is also remembered for his political ideas on Church and State.
